ABSTRACT
We examined the starting characteristic of the first left-turn vehicle, focusing on the disadvantage of parking twice in the existing setting mode. We established the optimization model of signal timing in the left-turn waiting zone to optimize the existing signal timing scheme, reduce or avoid the second stop, and enable the vehicle to pass through the intersection more continuous movement and with less stopping. Traffic simulation software was used for verification and analysis. Comparative before and after signal timing optimization, CO, NOX, VOC, and other emissions and fuel consumption values, as well as parking times were respectively reduced by 7.37%, 9.84%, 8.86%, 11.29%, and 13.78%. We demonstrate that the optimization model of left-turn waiting zone signal timing can effectively reduce the second stop of vehicles in the waiting zone and reduce the exhaust emission at intersections.
