ABSTRACT
In order to determine the accident characteristics of expressway tunnels and improve the safety of tunnel driving, through the analysis of data from ten expressways and adjacent road sections in Zhejiang Province for six consecutive years, the paper summarizes differences between tunnel sections and adjacent road sections in terms of accident rate, accident severity, accident time, accident pattern, and accident weather. Then divides the tunnel section into five sections, and processes the accident data of each section by mathematical statistics to obtain the accident characteristics of different sections of the tunnel. The results show that the tunnel section has a “magnification effect” on traffic accidents, the proportion of accident rate in expressway tunnel sections is higher than that of common road sections, but tunnel sections are more affected by traffic volume; under 90% confidence level, the accident rate of tunnel entrance area is generally higher than that of exit area.
