Research on the Influence of ADAS Equipment on Driving Smoothness on Freeway Using Natural Driving Test Data

Publication: CICTP 2020

ABSTRACT

ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) is regarded as the primary stage of the intelligent vehicle and is considered to be a necessary prerequisite for automatic driving. Relevant products are currently in various stages of popularization. However, how does the ADAS equipment affect the drivers on the freeway or expressway. Can it effectively improve driving smoothness? This is the issue that this paper and analyses. This study is based on small-scale natural driving test data. In Shanghai, 10 drivers made 21 travels (1,811 min, 1,232 km) before and after the installation of ADAS equipment. Mobile phone apps were used to collect high-frequency position, speed, acceleration, angular velocity, and other data. Results show that the speed and deceleration are slightly decreased with the use of ADAS. The acceleration, steering speed, rapid steering behavior, and the frequency of using turning signals significantly improved. The current warning strategy needs improvement.
