Control of a Composite Braking System for Range-Extended Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Publication: CICTP 2020

ABSTRACT

With the development of heavy-duty commercial vehicles towards the direction of low-carbon and high-speed, the brake systems’ load is also increasing. A composite braking system combining mechanical friction braking, motor regenerative braking, and auxiliary braking (eddy current retarder) was established, and a fuzzy logic control strategy was proposed to determine the proportion of each braking subsystem, taking into account the characteristics of subsystems and constraints such as battery SOC (state of charge). Simulations were carried out on the slope road and flat road respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy can effectively improve the overall energy efficiency and braking safety of range-extended heavy commercial vehicles.
