ABSTRACT
To determine the timing and site selection of the standby trains launch in metro stations with large passenger flows, the paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model. Firstly, the criterion to identify large passenger stations is developed. The time to launch standby trains is then determined once the passenger flow status of a metro station meets the criterion. Based on that, a multi-objective optimization model to minimize waiting times of passengers in a congested station by adjusting departure times of standby trains and following trains is then formulated. Particle swarm optimization with penalty function is adopted to solve the model. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated via a case study of Guangzhou Metro Line 8. Results show that an effective selection of the time and site of standby trains can minimize the waiting time at stations with large passenger flows.
