Intersection Angle Design Based on Drivers’ Visual Characteristics and SSD

Publication: CICTP 2020

ABSTRACT

There are many intersections where the angle of crossing highways is not close to 90°. When the angle of the SI is too small, drivers in the acute quadrant have a poor line of sight. Due to the requirements of Design specification for highway alignment about the intersection angle not being particular, drivers have a limited visual field and the requirement of stopping sight distance (SSD) cannot be guaranteed, which may contribute to frequent accidents. This paper points out reasonable skewed intersection angles. The research shows that the minimum of the SI angle is controlled by the left-turn calculation model of crossed-road vehicles. The angle increases with the increasing turning radius. The results provide a theoretical basis for SI design.
