ABSTRACT
As one of Maryland's fastest-growing regions, Howard County, a suburb of the Baltimore/Washington, DC, metropolitan area, has seen a 34 percent increase in population over the past decade. Projected population will grow to 328,000 by 2035. As a result, and as a means of improving reliability, the Howard County Department of Public Works completed a capital project to install 3.15 miles of 36-inch Diameter Water Transmission Main in the Columbia area. The water main alignment selected includes two crossings of U.S. Route 29, consisting of 1,225 feet of micro-tunneling, two river crossings, and what was considered the most challenging aspect of the project, installation of 7,500 feet of water main under one of the busiest roads in the region.
