Publication: Urbanization Challenges in Emerging Economies: Energy and Water Infrastructure; Transportation Infrastructure; and Planning and Financing

ABSTRACT

Two major cities of Gujarat: Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will be connected by the means of Metro System whose primary aim is to ease public transport. As a result of this project, 4 corners of Ahmedabad will be connected with 2 corridors and 32 stations. This paper focuses on impact on transportation system in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar due Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA). Study of routes covered by Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and routes which will be covered by Metro rails is carried out. The study is done on the basis of location of stations and density of commuters at that station. Areas covered by both the public transport systems are studied and a conclusion is drawn on validity of proper location of stations. Areas not covered by both the transportation system are also studied and mentioned. A brief outline on future effects on transportation of twin cities i.e. Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar by implementation of multi-modal transport system is given. It was observed that few regions of Ahmedabad from where the major commuter traffic may be generated in future are not covered in the route.
