ABSTRACT
Great River Energy has recently experienced two unexpected tower issues that required innovative repair techniques. One incident involved a tractor on autopilot, and the other was due to five inches of radial rime ice on shield wires. The tractor incident required the replacement of an entire tower leg while the 400 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line remained energized. The tower leg was replaced using temporary longitudinal and transverse stabilization and field welding by a certified structural steel welder. The shield wire icing incident caused the lattice arm supporting the shield wires to fail, and unmanned aerial vehicle technology was used to facilitate the damage assessment. Tower repairs are always tricky business with multiple moving parts, so extreme caution is required.
