Recent Duke Energy Studies to Develop Transmission Pole Standard
Publication: Electrical Transmission and Substation Structures 2018: Dedicated to Strengthening our Critical Infrastructure
ABSTRACT
In this paper, the results and recommendations of a multi-year study to develop high-level pole standard for transmission line construction across different geographical regions of Duke Energy are discussed. The pole material selection process is very complex considering the multiple options available in different corrosive and environmental conditions. An understanding of how a pole material ages throughout its service life, what options are available for life extension practices, when to implement them, and at what cost are essential for a detailed life-cycle cost study. With the help of EPRI, data was established based on field inspection and associated laboratory testing of 273 steel pole structures across Duke Energy regions. Current Duke Energy cathodic protection designs were evaluated based on a full-scale testing at EPRI’s facility. From the results of life-cycle cost studies, pole material standards were developed for different corrosion severity of subgrade and atmospheric environments and installation conditions.
