ABSTRACT
This paper focuses on the rehabilitation design for old brick sewers based on an ongoing project in Columbus, Ohio. These brick sewers date back to 1800s and some of them sustained severe deformation (ovalization) as well as buckling over time. As a first step, a stress-strain approximation was performed for select sewers (with a diameter range from 48 to 136-inch) for single, double, and triple ring configuration, and the results suggest remarkably high stress concentrations in areas where bricks are missing or pipe was not originally built to the plans. The overall rehabilitation design approach as well as the computation methods used for trenchless rehabilitation of large brick conduits are discussed.
