ABSTRACT
An aerial portion of the 72-inch arched concrete Blue River interceptor crossing Brush Creek collapsed in July 2016. On call emergency responders were mobilized immediately and established a bypass pumping system to divert the wastewater from flowing into the creek. The Kansas City, Missouri, Water Services Department (WSD) began work on a conceptual design for the repair and ultimately chose the design build delivery method to facilitate a timely repair. Given the emergency situation, potential design build teams were given one week to prepare a preliminary design and a guaranteed maximum price proposal to meet a 90-day design and construction timeline. WSD reviewed the qualification and price proposals. A team was selected and a notice to proceed (NTP) was given within three days. WSD contracted with the design build team of Leath & Sons/Burns & McDonnell to design and construct the repairs. The repairs included replacement of the entire aerial portion of the interceptor (approximately 375 linear feet) with a 72-inch steel pipe mounted on piers supported on drilled shafts. The replacement pipe joined the existing arched sewer at junction structures constructed on each end of the crossing.
