Evaluation of Structural Design Methodologies for Large Diameter Pipeline Renewal Design

Publication: Pipelines 2018: Condition Assessment, Construction, and Rehabilitation

ABSTRACT

Large diameter gravity storm and sanitary sewer pipes are widely used all around the world. Failure of these system is costly both directly due to emergency repairs or replacement of the failed system and indirectly due to its impacts on general public and social life. Therefore, they routinely require inspection, maintenance, and eventual renewal or replacement. The structural rehabilitation or renewal process can be performed using trenchless structural methods such as sliplining with precast fiberglass pipe materials. Conversely to circular liners, for which in the U.S. the ASTM F-1216-16 standard design methods are available; in Europe, specifically U.K., Germany, and France there are structural design guidelines for non-circular shapes. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and compare design methodologies for large diameter pipeline renewal.
