Studies of the Effect of Seasonal Temperature Change on a Circle Beam Supporting Excavation

Publication: Transportation Research Congress 2016: Innovations in Transportation Research Infrastructure

ABSTRACT

With the aim to present the effect of seasonal temperature change on circle beam supporting systems, the monitoring data of a typical excavation engineering in soft clay area has been analyzed. Relationships between seasonal temperature change and pit-retaining structure displacement, circle beam supporting load, the surroundings, are presented in this paper. The analyzed results indicate that the horizontal displacement of the retaining structure increased 15.67 mm to 21.45 mm due to temperature descending from 16 °C to -2 °C, accounting for 50% to 152% of the initial value and there was approximate a linear relationship between the horizontal displacement increment of pile top and the temperature change. Supporting axial force of the circle beam fluctuates with the fluctuation of temperature and the change trend is consistent. The increase of horizontal displacement of the retaining structure further aggravate the soil settlement outside the pit, causing adverse effects on the whole deformation of excavation and the surrounding environment. Using general finite element software ABAQUS to make a numerical simulation, calculation results is better in line with monitoring results. The simulation results show that the bending moment of the circle beam increases with the temperature decreasing and there is an approximately linear relation between them, which is obviously detrimental to the support mainly subjected to axial load. And the maximum settlement increment reached 21 mm with the temperature descending from 16 °C to -2 °C. In addition, the effect of rising temperature on the soil pressure behind retaining wall is great while the temperature reduction has less impact on it.
