Highway Geometric Design for Mountainous Regions Considering the Vehicle-Road Coupling Factors
Publication: Transportation Research Congress 2016: Innovations in Transportation Research Infrastructure
ABSTRACT
High grades and sharp curves are the major features for highway geometry in mountainous regions. Excessive lateral stress, which is associated with rollover, may occur at sharp curves. Therefore, understanding the relationship between speed and curve radius is necessary to recommend suitable ranges of curve radius in terms of speed limit. In this paper, the safety model was developed based on vehicle-road coupling principles. The model, which considers two critical scenarios, including sideslip and rollover, was validated by software simulation. The recommended values for curves in mountainous region were provided based on both simulation and theoretical results. The results may also provide reference for the mountainous highway geometry design.
