Research on RLWT and APA Rutting Loading Mode Based on Digital Image Technology

Publication: Transportation Research Congress 2016: Innovations in Transportation Research Infrastructure

ABSTRACT

In order to compare the difference of loading mode between the RLWT (rotary loaded wheel tester) and the APA, the specimens were compacted using the same gradation under different compaction times, the rutting tests were conducted using RLWT and the APA. Moreover, the images of specimens profile were processed with digital image technology, and the equivalent diameters of coarse aggregates were extracted and analyzed. The results show that the angle between the long axis of coarse aggregate and X-axis increases gradually for RLWT, oppositely, the angle between the long axis of coarse aggregate and X-axis decreases gradually for APA, which is agree with the movement direction of aggregates in the open traffic pavement. The study indicates that it exist great difference of loading mode between the RLWT and the APA, the research for the extensive promotion of RLWT should be further conducted.
