Investigation on Uplift Dynamic Pressures in Crown Wall Breakwaters
Publication: Coastal Structures and Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2015: Resilient Coastal Communities
ABSTRACT
Experiments were conducted to analyze the commonly accepted assumptions of the linearity of the uplift pressure on crown walls and the simultaneity of the occurrence of their maximum values with those of the horizontal pressures. A small-scale model of a rubble mound breakwater with an “L” shaped concrete crown wall was tested in a wave flume. Regarding the vertical pressure distribution, its non-linearity was evidenced and it was found that its dynamics and unpredictability increase as the vertical position of the crown wall is close to, or lower than, the still water level. A simple model for estimating the uplift pressure is presented and a 3D numerical model, Flow 3D, was calibrated and tuned to serve as a tool for further tests.
