Quantification of Safety Standards for Small Islands in the Wadden Sea

Publication: Coastal Structures and Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2015: Resilient Coastal Communities

ABSTRACT

The ten Northfrisian Halligen are small undiked marsh islands. They are located in the German part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. The houses of the inhabitants are built on artificial dwelling mounds and during storm events these mounds are the only places which are not completely inundated on the islands. The design of these artificial dwelling mounds is mainly based on tradition and no scientific design approach exists. In order to prioritize protection measures for the different dwelling mounds, a safety standard has to be defined. The most important criterion for safety during storm surges is the water depth due to wave overtopping on the dwelling mound. For this reason, maximum allowed water depths on the dwelling mounds are defined. Numerical simulations are performed to simulate the water depths due to wave overtopping on the dwelling mounds and to test the compliance of safety standards.
