Coast Guard’s Post-Disaster Assessment and Evaluation of Critical Infrastructure

Publication: Coastal Structures and Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2015: Resilient Coastal Communities

ABSTRACT

The Coast Guard (CG) has established a successful post disaster infrastructure evaluation process that results in immediate site remediation and damage control, as well as development of future restoration projects. Following a natural disaster, the CG immediately deploys a damage assessment team (DAT) to investigate storm damage and give instructions to a repair team who will take immediate corrective action. The CG’s approach can be replicated and used on facility damage sustained by natural disasters, of any scale. Organizations with multiple facilities can have a small designated assessment team trained to look for specific hazards utilizing a standardized checklist. The importance of a quick response prevents further damage, saves money, and increases the lifespan of that facility. This paper will discuss the CG’s approach to immediate assessment and repair of facilities following natural disasters. The two case studies demonstrate implementation of this process on varying degrees of post disaster destruction.
