Abstract
In the last two decades, a variety of rating systems have been developed to gauge the sustainability of transportation systems, including their environmental, economic, and social impacts. Some of these rating systems have focused on particular modes of transportation, while others have provided frameworks for an area such as a city or urban corridor; still others have examined the strategies for developing such rating systems. It had been several years since a review of these practices has been published, and the field is changing rapidly. This paper draws upon an annotated bibliography on sustainable transportation rating systems, created from an extensive literature review on the subject. A multidimensional rubric was developed for analyzing the existing work. This analysis has identified overlap and gaps in the existing literature, and opportunities to address these gaps through future research, development, and adoption of both established and emerging practices.
