Abstract
India and other major countries of the world need immediate addressing of fast growing needs of transportation. If not, it may have stress on available resources. Recent studies indicate that by 2030, 590 million people will live in cities and need more than trillion dollars of investment on infrastructure. To meet the demand of such huge population, sustainable transportation planning is required. Rail based mass rapid transit system (MRTS) seems to be one of the sustainable solution. Commuters can save travel time. In India, metro rail constructions have been taking place massively. The present paper, deals with environmental factors and other critical issues pertaining to MRTS. The study considers the effect of MRTS on Bengaluru, India using spatial techniques. Two factors are considered for spatial analysis viz. environmental, and economical. The parameters are analyzed for emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), noises, and air quality and that for economical factor are commercial and residential land value. The data generated is used to estimate the present trend in comparison with emission standards. Geographical information system (GIS) is used to indicate the point to point effect. The results show the effect of construction of metro in the study area.
