Roof Projections
Publication: Snow Loads: Guide to the Snow Load Provisions of ASCE 7-22
Abstract
Snow drifts frequently form at parapet walls and adjacent to rooftop units (RTUs). The drift on the upwind side of the RTU is a windward drift for the same reasons as for parapet walls. There are significant differences between leeward drifts at roof steps and windward drifts at a parapet wall, roof projection or roof step. Leeward drifts have a triangular shape, whereas windward drifts begin with a quadrilateral shape and given sufficient upwind snow source and wind, may morph into a triangular shape. A taller addition to an existing building is a common problem for structural engineers. The new roof geometry results in a roof step. One approach to minimize the leeward drift atop the existing roof is to construct a snow capture wall at the common column line.
