Infiltration and Soil Water

Publication: Statistical Analysis of Hydrologic Variables: Methods and Applications

Abstract

Water is essential for life, and soils sustain life largely by retaining water and nutrients in the biotic zone. This chapter addresses the critical hydrological processes of surface infiltration and soil water flow and storage. It lays a basic groundwork for understanding soil’s hydraulic properties and processes of water infiltration, water retention, and redistribution. The concepts of natural variability and statistical distributions are introduced. Both continuum theory (diffuse flow) and preferred flow processes are discussed within a representative volume and across heterogeneous landscapes, where patterns emerge. A rich history of quantifying water infiltration into soils and associated flow and storage of water in soils is also explored. Infiltration and soil-water redistribution at the subsurface are estimated and predicted using equations with scale-dependent effective parameters, which may be derived explicitly from governing equations and some knowledge or assumptions about the subscale variability.
