Watershed Approach for Controlling Erosion and Non-Point Sources Pollutants to Water Bodies

Publication: Sustainable Water Resources Management

Abstract

Water pollution includes point source pollution and non-point source (NPS) pollution. Both point source and NPS pollution must be considered when planning watershed management to improve surface water quality. Soil erosion contributes the main source of sediment, leading to adverse impacts on water quality, reservoir storage capacity, agricultural productivity, and regional freshwater ecology. Soil erosion increases the turbidity of surface waters, making water treatment difficult. Water quality models simulate the fate of pollutants and the state of selected water quality variables in water bodies. Because excess discharges of point source and NPS pollution deteriorate water quality, developing management strategies in watersheds to keep water quality at acceptable levels is important.
