Abstract
This chapter addresses issues of optimum use of irrigation water, outlines root uptake models available in the literature, and discusses their relative merits. It also presents published work on performance evaluation of prominent root uptake models and empirical formulations to compute root uptake parameters. Examining several published root uptake patterns shows that root uptake models are often calibrated using field data such as soil moisture contents, rainfall rates or amounts, and soil evaporation and plant transpiration rates. One study indicates that if the soil moisture characteristics of heterogeneous soil layers are known, the moisture extraction prediction efficiency of the root uptake model is enhanced. This not only helps in providing the optimum amount of irrigation water to crops, but also helps in developing accurate irrigation schedules.
