Water Sustainable Urban Designs

Publication: Sustainable Water Resources Management

Abstract

A water-sensitive urban development or water-sustainable urban design (WSUD) can be described as a local solution to global problems stemming from reliance on conveyance and centralized storage/discharge of water/wastewater in urban areas. Initially, WSUD focuses on water systems management, but stormwater management has been the key focus. The WSUD approach aims to see and manage the water cycle as a water resource with impacts on natural systems and the community’s aesthetic and recreational activities and economic vitality. To implement WSUDs, water cycle management and environmentally oriented sustainable measures need to be incorporated, and to achieve such goals, larger understanding of sustainable approaches such as best management practices (BMPs) and best planning practices (BPPs) are highly significant. Capturing and reusing stormwater is critical to the successful implementation of WSUDs.
