Abstract
Proper understanding of the urban water resources system and its components is necessary for the optimum planning, design, and utilization of available water resources and better operation and maintenance of water, sanitation, and drainage services. Careful assessment of problems associated with any system is essential for its sustainable operation and management. Conventional urban water management systems include separate management of components of urban water resources systems, i.e., water supply, sewerage systems, and stormwater drainage systems. Urbanization increases competing water demands, such as municipal, industrial, agricultural, etc., which may lead to problems like water scarcity and pollution. System engineering techniques can be used for optimum integration of various types of water sources into urban water supply systems that consider system and operational constraints of different components.
