Chapter 6
Pipe Materials: Steel
Publication: Water Pipeline Condition Assessment
Abstract
Steel pipe is common in both aboveground and belowground installations and generally has a large enough diameter to allow internal visual inspection. In nearly all cases, modern steel water pipe has some sort of protective lining and coating. Cement mortar lining is by far the most commonly applied protection for the interior of steel water pipes. Older installations may lack lining or coatings, leaving it susceptible to corrosion. Early steel pipe was generally uncoated or coated primarily with a hot dipping of asphalt or asphalt derivatives. For buried steel pipe, the primary design consideration is circumferential resistance to internal pressure. Two readily recognized conditions that warrant further inspection of a steel pipeline are leakage and general water loss.
