Planning for Sustainable Growth in the Antelope Valley, California: 22.5 mi of Transmission Main and Counting

Publication: Pipelines 2014: From Underground to the Forefront of Innovation and Sustainability

Abstract

To maintain sustainable growth in the Antelope Valley region of California, the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency (AVEK) has implemented the Water Supply Stabilization Project No. 2. The project consists of the development of a 1,500 acre (607 ha) groundwater recharge and extraction field that will recharge water from California's State Water Project (SWP) during periods when SWP supplies exceed demands and will extract up to 90% of the banked water during periods of high demand when SWP supplies are low. During the first phase of the project anticipated to be more than $75 million in capital improvements at completion, AVEK has installed more than 22.5 mi (36.2 km) of 48-in. (1,200 mm) cement mortar lined and coated (CML&C) steel pipe, 3.5 mi (5.6 km) of 12-in. to 30-in. (300 mm to 750 mm) PVC/CML&C steel well collection pipelines, and five 36-in. (900 mm) CML&C steel pipe turnouts to an existing 60-in. (1,500 mm) prestressed concrete cylindrical pipe.
