Abstract
An independent fire protection system, known as the Auxiliary Water Supply System (AWSS) was implemented after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to be used as the secondary defense against fires in the event the municipal water supply system fails or underperforms. The system has two saltwater pumping stations, Pump Station 1 and Pump Station 2, that deliver salt water to the AWSS following an earthquake and ensuing fire. The inlet tunnels to Pump Stations 1 and 2 are essential links in the system. This paper describes the assessment of the seismic performance of the inlet tunnels. Two damage scenarios for Pump Station 1 and one damage scenario for Pump Station 2 are discussed and remediation options are presented.
