Analysis and Prediction of Asphalt Pavement's Early Rutting Based on Secondary Compaction
Publication: ICTE 2013: Safety, Speediness, Intelligence, Low-Carbon, Innovation
Abstract
Dynamic stability of asphalt mixture usually represents anti-rutting performance. The secondary compaction's influence at the early stage of the rutting test is eliminated during dynamic stability calculations, which just measures the asphalt mixture's shear rheological ability. All kinds of theory of rutting prediction method are also based on asphalt mixture creep and shear rheological. So now neither test method nor theory prediction method is covered by secondary compaction of rutting effects. In fact, secondary compaction effect on rutting is very large due to the existence of the uneven compaction degree and compaction deficiency during construction of highway. Especially in the first few years of highway operation, secondary compaction is the main reason for rutting formation. A kind of new simple test method is designed for defining secondary compaction's influence on the rut, based on rotating compaction meter and pavement quality indicator (PQI). Combined with Qing Zhou-Lin Shu highway test sections, the author summarizes the law about secondary compaction's quantity size and time. The idea affords a new way to perfect the rutting prediction model and improve prediction accuracy.
