Effect of the Establishment of Xiamen Southeast International Shipping Center on West-Strait Economic Zone

Abstract

Due to the overlay of economic hinterland in West-Strait ports, including Fuzhou Port, Meizhou Bay Port, Xiamen Port, there appears vicious competition. The establishment of Xiamen Southeast International Shipping Center will end it. Fujian Province will focus on the construction of Xiamen port, make it into the axis center of cruising ferry, yacht, and container. First, the paper introduced current situation of logistics in the West-Strait economic zone and discussed the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities, and challenges in establishing international shipping center by SWOT analysis method. Second, the paper divided the main elements of container transport competitiveness into geographical conditions and hinterland resources, software and hardware facilities, efficiency of port operation, cost-benefit based on enterprise competitiveness theory, built up container transport competitiveness evaluation model based on improved entropy TOPSIS, and then summarized the current situation in Fuzhou Port, Meizhou Bay Port, Xiamen Port by spot investigation, calculated the index ranking and summarized advantages and disadvantages of Xiamen port in developing container logistics. Finally, the paper investigated how the port logistics can drive the development of regional economy and promote the coordinated development of ports in west coast, provided reference for enhancing regional competitiveness.
