Abstract
A typhoon is one of the most serious disastrous weather that threatens the safety of ship's navigation. The ocean going ship typhoon avoidance system under the shore-based information support was designed and achieved. The system includes three subsystems and five databases. Based on an electronic chart platform, through ship-shore communication subsystem automatically, the system obtains shore-based meteorological information (especially typhoon intensity and motion path information). Combined with ship data information (ship limited wind wave resistance ability and cargo carrying condition), the system gives a risk assessment on the original route, uses the goal circle method and radar plotting principle to calculate the starting time that a ship takes typhoon avoidance action and the measures to avoid typhoons. The application results indicate that the system can reduce the influence of a typhoon on the ship operation, improve the safety and economy of ships.
