Efficient Energy Use in Pump Water Supply Systems in Cold Regions
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2012: Crossing Boundaries
Abstract
Different scenarios affect the efficiency of pumping systems in cold regions, particularly in water distribution. Increasing efficiency of pumping systems conserves energy, making water distribution more environmental friendly. Inefficient use of energy in cold regions is regularly disregarded although, there's room for improvements. Inefficient design may contribute to problems of water distribution in cold climate regions such as freezing of water towers, pipe seals stretched beyond their elasticity, and drawing water from a frozen pressurized body of water. Observations of occurrences related to cold climate have been completed through field visits. Pipe-network software is utilized to simulate scenarios for pipe network designs, to compare water distribution conditions with a hypothetical problem that may occur in cold climate regions. Comparisons show how inefficient freezing of the stand pipe of a water tower may be. Opportunities are identified for further research to improve the efficiency of water distribution in cold climate regions.
