High Resolution Urban Hydrologic Modeling
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2012: Crossing Boundaries
Abstract
America's cities have confronted local climate change (i.e. the "heat island" effect, and increased storm runoff) for many decades; now, global climate change presents new planning and design challenges. Because of the size of cities and complexity of urban drainage systems, planning has typically been conducted at a relatively large scale with sub-basins on the order of about 1 km2. However, the most basic scale for urban hydrology is the city block, which has a scale of about 0.02 km2 (approximately, 200 meters by 100 meters or 2 hectares). Urban hydrologic models have evolved to be computationally robust at this scale, and at the same time, the computer resources available to solve complex stormwater systems have exploded, allowing these hydrologic models to be solved quickly. Is it time to up the resolution of urban hydrologic modeling? Or is the current modeling paradigm sufficient?
