The Influence of Mineral Fillers on Mastic Aging Properties
Publication: ICCTP 2011: Towards Sustainable Transportation Systems
Abstract
Previous studies have shown that, except for absorbing oily components from bitumen, the petrographic nature of aggregates may have added effects on the aging of bitumen through oxidation catalysis and chemical adsorption. In addition, it is widely recognized that the fillers and fine fractions of aggregates play a dominant role in these added physical-chemical interactions between bitumen binder and aggregate as they contribute the majority of surface area. This paper investigates the influences of different fillers (acidic and basic) on the aging properties of mastics and their recovered binders. The Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) tests and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were applied to the mastics and bitumen binders at different stages of the Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT). The study results show that the acidic and basic fillers affect bitumen aging in differing ways due to their different mineral textures.
