A Detection Technology for Potential Safety Hazards in Road Traffic Environments

Publication: ICCTP 2011: Towards Sustainable Transportation Systems

Abstract

Using the prevention and control principle of the prevention-oriented road traffic accident, this study established a virtual detection and calculation system to discover potential safety hazards in road traffic environments using the harmonized principle of combined driver-vehicle-road operation. This system is based on the perception of drivers' road safety, behavioral characteristics of judgment and speed control, characteristics of vehicle brake heat fading and dynamical characteristics of the vehicle-road system. We are then able to realize quantitative perspicuity of the type, ingredient, and distribution of potential safety hazards in road traffic, as well as the possible form of accidents, before putting new roads or reconstructed roads into use. Using these results, we could clearly make a rectification request or implement active control measures in order to prevent future road traffic accidents. This study technology has been used in the accident prevention projects of six mountain roads, including BaoLong and XiHan highway, and has achieved the expected results.
