Genetic Algorithm's Application in Bus Dispatch Optimization

Publication: ICCTP 2011: Towards Sustainable Transportation Systems

Abstract

With the swift development of our social economy, the transportation problems of our cities have become more and more serious. The public traffic with large capacity, low energy consumption, and low pollution have been placed on the agenda. To develop public traffic is a way to solve transportation problems of our cities. And an effective Bus Dispatch is necessary for an advanced bus system. Thus, the research of the bus dispatch is important for the improvement of bus dispatch management level. Above all, the bus dispatch mainly influences the passengers' satisfaction and bus company's interests. In order to evaluate the bus dispatch scheme, we should ascertain the evaluation indicators for passengers' satisfaction and bus company's interests. Secondly, we should quantify the evaluation indicators as their different units. Then, we could construct a multiple objective programming model, containing passengers' and bus company's satisfaction, in accordance with the evaluation indicators' weight. Finally, we solve the multiple objective programming models by utilizing Genetic Algorithm. Then we could compare the total satisfaction for passengers and the bus company between the before and after optimization based on some certain cities' data.
