Abstract
In order to perfect our capacity study of urban road intersections, the short lane group was defined by means of hypothesis testing, it was learned that time headway of vehicles passing through an intersection is subject to the shifted negative exponential distribution. Using the Ashworth method, the values of critical gap and follow-up time of merging vehicles passing through an intersection were obtained. Then applying gap acceptance theory, the maximum traffic volume model to calculate traffic volume merging from outer shared through lane to inner through lane was obtained, and the simplified calculation model was derived as well. On the base of the research above, the capacity calculation model of the through short lane group was derived. Research indicates that the capacity of the through short lane group is equal to the capacity of the inner through lane adding to the minimum value between the capacity of the outer shared through lane under the condition of absence of the short lane and the maximum traffic volume which can merge from the outer shard lane to the inner through lane.
