Stress-Strain Behavior of Gabion in Compression Test and Direct Shear Test

Abstract
The study of stress-strain behavior for Gabion is important for acquiring the deformation characteristics and stability quality of gabion retaining structures. Accordingly, it will provide theoretical basis for the design and construction of gabion retaining wall. Compression test and direct shear test for multigroup gabion were performed with large-scale multifunction testing machine for soil-stone mixture. The mechanical properties and stress-strain behavior of gabion in the process of test were obtained after test data processing and test results analyzing. Conclusions are drawn as follows: the strength of gabion comes from the combined action of stones filling and wire cage. The main deformation of gabion appears as lateral expanding deformation in one-way compression test, and the maximum lateral expanding deformation locates at the center point of gabion. Gabion is not an elastic body, and it presents typical elastic behavior just at early stage of loading. The strength of gabion is slightly fluctuant in compression and shear because that stones filling in gabion fail to pieces and are rearranged continually during the process of loading. The gabion has a residual strength after the wire of gabion fails.
