Abstract
SAMPAVE (Stress Absorbing Mixtures Pavement), a stress absorbing layer of particular sand asphalt mixture, is widely used in the structure of asphalt pavement overlay on old cement concrete pavement or other anti-cracking pavement structures because of its predominant anti-cracking, anti-leakage and adhesive characteristics. Aggregate grading design method was analyzed based on the varying i method theory, and the grading range of stress absorbing layer mixture was put forward. Then the volumetric characteristics of SAMPAVE mixture were compared between the SGC method and the Marshall method. The result shows that the optimum asphalt content designed by the Marshall method is 0.2% higher than that of the SGC in terms of the same grading and asphalt content. Therefore the Marshall control method of stress absorbing layer mixture is suggested during field construction.
