A Better Move—Automated Container Terminals in North America
Publication: Ports 2010: Building on the Past, Respecting the Future
Abstract
This paper presents examples of automated terminal planning and design projects that have been under development in North America and some of the factors and logistical steps, both nationally and internationally, that have contributed to the evolution of these facilities. Examples of automated European, Asian, and Australian terminals, along with the role of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), serve as a backdrop for the evolutionary development occurring in North America. Comparative results from simulation work are used to describe some of these systems in terms of efficiency, cost, and environmental impacts. Client, terminal, and location names may be omitted for some of the North American examples due to confidentiality.
