Application of a Generalized Plasticity Model to Ultra-High Rockfill Dam

Publication: Earth and Space 2010: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments

Abstract

The fundamental theory of generalized plasticity is proposed in detail. With the framework of the theory, irreversible plastic deformations during loading and unloading are introduced without specifying any yield or plastic potential surfaces explicitly and the soil behavior under complicated stress path can be simulated. Based on the theory, a finite element code with concerning the model is programmed and tested. By using the numerical code, all the parameters that the model needs are obtained for a ultra-high rockfill dam and the static response of the dam is simulated. The results show that PZ-III model possesses considerable adaptability for simulating high rockfill dams.
