Rate-Dependent Behaviors of Reinforced Concrete Members

Publication: Earth and Space 2010: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments

Abstract

In this paper, the stress-strain relationship of concrete given by design code of reinforced concrete structures is modified by taking account into the effect of strain rates on concrete according to dynamic experimental results of concrete. Then, the cracking moment and curvature, limit moment and curvature of reinforced concrete beam and column are studied by using the modified expression. During the studying, the dynamic characteristic of concrete and steel are considered both or respectively. The results of numerical analysis show that the dynamic characteristic of concrete has little effects on the cracking moment and curvature, limit moment and curvature of moderate reinforced beams but the dynamic characteristic of steel affects obviously on them. The dynamic characteristic of concrete has little effects on the limit moment of large eccentricity column but has obvious effects on the limit moment of small eccentricity column; Nevertheless, the dynamic characteristic of steel effects obviously on limit moment and limit curvature of both large and small eccentricity columns.
