Side Road Traffic Considered in Transit Signal Priority Control

Publication: ICCTP 2009: Critical Issues In Transportation Systems Planning, Development, and Management

Abstract

To overcome the shortcomings in existing control mechanisms and adapt to domestic transit operation conditions such as high frequency and overlapped bus routes, many researchers work on various optimization methods. In fact, the effectiveness of priority control varies with side road traffic demand. If a side road is less congested, priority control has less of an impact, whereas otherwise the impact increases accordingly. There is still a lack of effective means by which to solve this problem. Based on former studies, this paper analyzes how priority control impacts side road traffic, optimizes key parameter settings like minimum green time and maximum green time, and adopts conditional priority as well as appropriate compensation strategies. It is hoped that this transit signal priority system can alleviate excessive changes in side road traffic.
