Abstract
As other pavement materials, asphalt mixtures are quite easy to suffer various distresses, but usually, the causes for each kind of distresses are different, so, before proper measures being adopted, it is very important to recognize correctly for the distress causes. In this paper, based on the present literatures and research results, cracking failure mechanism of asphalt pavement was studied, and internal structures of asphalt mixtures which are thought to be relevant to pavement failure are also analyzed. It was found that shape changes of stress-strain curves of asphalt mixtures are closely associated with the evolving process of its internal cracks, so, the extension properties of cracks in asphalt mixtures should be studied on the meso-level.
