Running Characteristics of Bicycle Traffic Flow with Its Traffic Capacity on Slow-Moving Traffic Shared-Use Paths
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009
Abstract
This paper mainly researches on the running characteristics of bicycle traffic flow with its traffic capacity under the circumstance of mixed traffic flow on the slow-moving traffic shared-use paths. The slow-moving traffic shared road can be used not only by pedestrians but also by cycles without physical separation or height difference, and the conventional traffic flow theories can't explain the rule of cycle running precisely. This paper firstly redefines some bicycle traffic parameters including traffic flow, speed, density and spatial occupancy per unit. Secondly some special data collection methods are designed for the object of study, and 5 typical trails of slow-moving traffic are selected to perform the investigation in Nanjing city in China. Thirdly we analyze different relationships among the parameters for bicycle on shared-use paths based on the data. Finally a model of bicycle traffic flow capacity is built to describe the relationship among the parameters of mixed traffic flow on the slow-moving traffic shared-use paths.
