The Traffic Guidance System of Elevated Roads in Hongqiao Comprehensive Transportation Hub
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009
Abstract
Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub is a large-scale modem and comprehensive transport hub, which assembles several traffic modes. The elevated roads in Hongqiao transportation hub include a lot of complex interchanges in order to meet the requirements of arrival & departure of different traffic modes. In this situation, how to choose optimal path is very important for passengers. Traffic guidance system under such complicated road circumstance would be different from the system under normal urban elevated roads. The paper would look into the discourses of traffic guidance system design under complicated circumstance. Firstly, according to the traffic organization scheme, the elevated roads in Hongqiao transportation hub are divided into different function zones. Comparison is used to analyze the traffic characters in each zone from the aspect of road function, traffic distribution and traffic composition. The guidance system should match the traffic characters in each zone. Then based on the traffic characters, this paper studies the traffic guidance strategy which describes the purpose of guidance system, the selection of information points and information provided by guidance system. The strategy is the core of the guidance system. In the end, ergonomics is applied in variable message design for different traffic demand, in order to make drivers get traffic information more easily. The type of VMS, the font size, font color and resolution should correspond with the information demand of passengers and the car's speed in each the information point. Some new-style VMS is applied in the traffic guidance system in order to integrate different types of information resources. Traffic guidance system is an efficient method to reasonably allocate the road resources, especially in such place where traffic demand is large but road resources are limited. Research on the traffic guidance system can improve the traffic situation and reduce the traffic congestion.
