Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2009
Abstract
The impact equations of a wheel-set on rails are established, the final angular velocities are derived according to the Lagrangian equation for impulsive motion. It is found that the impulsive moment due to the lateral impact of wheel and rail will cause the non-flanging wheel to lift off the rail. Based on the final angular velocity and the law of energy conversation, the criterion for wheel lift is proposed and the critical lateral velocity of wheel-set is also suggested.
