A Reverse Curve Cable Stay Bridge in Jordan
Publication: Structures Congress 2008: Crossing Borders
Abstract
Infrastructure, in particular transportation sector in developing nations are facing increasing difficulty in introducing Flyovers/Bridges over the existing network of roads, as they have to be constructed without disturbing or blocking the existing traffic. Such problems can be tackled by introducing new technologies like segmental construction of larger spans so that the ground below is disturbed to very minimum. Long span structures definitely require huge investments which may seem uneconomical, but if structural performance is greater than normal structures, this itself is a good return. This was brought into sharp focus when in Amman, the Capital city of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a signature bridge was to be constructed over an existing and a busy highway without disturbing and blocking the existing traffic. Adding to this was stringent quality requirement for trouble free life of the bridge for over 100 years. This aesthetic bridge designed as a cable stayed structure forms part of inner ring road being developed by the Municipality of Greater Amman to avoid traffic congestion in the city.
